A lot of people run into an issue when trying to connect their Bluetooth hearing aid to their office telephone. Their are two main reasons why people run into trouble when trying to adapt a hearing aid for office phones. The first is that ninety percent of the phones sold commercially are not Bluetooth enabled and cannot connect to a headset. The second reason is that wireless headsets use DECT 6.0 wireless technology, and the ones that are Bluetooth enabled use the Bluetooth as a Line-In, not to broadcast audio.
Luckily, there is a solution for you! Plantronics has made it simple and easy to hook up your Bluetooth hearing aid to both your office telephone and your computer! The trick is in using a Plantronics MDA200 USB Switch!
This device is typically used to connect a USB Headset to an office phone. By using a special Plantronics SSP 2714-01 Bluetooth Adapter Dongle (specifically created for hearing aids) you can adapt this device to work with a Bluetooth Hearing Aid! NOTE: THIS IS A SPECIAL ORDER DONGLE. This will even work in tandem with a lifter so that you don’t have to take the phone of the hook when answering a call! Below you will see how the device is set-up to connect to all three items:
This dongle has been certified by Plantronics to work with Minnesota Wire and Cable (aka Hatis) headsets. A third party has verified that this set-up will also work with most Bluetooth Hearing Aids made by Phonak, Oticon, Noizfree Beetle, iCom, Starkey, ComPilot, Unitron uDirect, Rexton Remote, Mini Blu RCU and Blu RCU, Mini-Tek, ClearSounds Quatro, SurfLink, Widex M-Dex, ReSound and more!!!
If your hearing does not include a pendant (for voice transmission), you will need a Bluetooth hearing aid pendant (streamer), which can purchased from an audiologist
Certain Bluetooth Hearing Aids designed specifically for iPhone or Android are not compatible with this set up.

Headsets for Training New Employees
For all businesses it is important that they train their employees correctly so they know how to deal with unique or difficult situations. The companies that utilize phones for most of their business need to be able to train their employees by listening into their calls and making sure the information they are providing is correct and up to date.
There are special training cords for both Jabra and Plantronics corded headsets. For Jabra there is the Y training/Supervisor Cable which enables the trainer to listen in on a conversation and also interject if needed.
Then there is the Y-training/supervisor cable with observe only functionality which enables the trainer to listen in but not interject.
For Plantronics there is only the y-training/supervisor cord, splitter with mute switch. This enables the supervisor to choose whether they interject or not by simply hitting the mute switch.
For wireless headsets that are older than the CS500 series you can use something called a Zoomswitch.
The Zoomswitch enables you to connect two wireless headsets two it and then connect it to the desk phone. This allows two people to be on the same phone call just like the training cables.

For those rare cases that you have both a wireless headset and a corded headset and wish to use them both for training you can still use the Zoomswitch.
However you will need to make sure you have an amplifier which connects from your corded headset to the Zoomswitch. The reason you will need an amplifier is because the Zoomswitch connects to the handset port which normally does not have any amplification by itself. Therefore you will need an amplifier to amplify the signal up to the corded headset. Since the wireless headset has an amplifier built into the base it does not need to be connected to an amp.

If you are using a Plantronics Wireless Headset via Plantronics APP-51 Electronic Hookswitch Cable into a Polycom IP Phone, and intermittently the headset will cut/drop out of the call- follow these steps to try and troubleshoot the problem.
The following steps will effectively reset both the Phone System, and the Wireless Headset System:
On the Polycom Phone, get to the Menu. Then select the following options: Settings > Basic > Preferences > Headset > – then look for the following- Plantronics Mode/Plantronics Hookswitch Mode / Plantronics EHS, Press Select/Enable, then the phone should reboot.
Once this is done, initiate a ‘hard reset’ by unplugging the phone line or Ethernet cable from the phone, wait 15 seconds, then plug the line back in.
Next, you will have to reset your wireless headset, the following pictures show a CS540 Wireless Headset System – the battery panels to other headsets can be found on the ear piece in different locations.
If using a CS540 with a headband, make sure the earpiece is lined up with the headband, so it disconnects properly without much force
Step 1: Remove the battery cover/panel
Step 2: Take out and disconnect the battery
Step 3: Disconnect the power cable from the wireless headset base
Step 4: Wait 15 seconds
Step 5: Plug the battery back into the headset and plug the power cord back into the base unit
Step 6: Reset the base by pressing and holding the button located on top of the unit towards the rear, the white light on the front of the base should start to blink
Step 7: Pair the headset by holding the “Volume Up” button for 10-15 seconds. On the CS540, it’s a little knob you have to hold up if held so the ear piece would be on your right ear (as shown in picture). The blinking on the base should change to solid white.
Once this is done, you should be finished and experience no call droppings! Cheers!
Are you in an IP (Voip) call center using softphones where you need train a new staff using USB headsets?
A Windows computer can only recognize one USB sound device at a time. So the computer cannot activate two USB headset at the same time. You can connect two USB headsets, but only one can be turned on.
There are no solution to utilize two USB headsets on a computer as training headsets. The reason is because your computer OS (Windows or Mac) does not recognize more than one USB headset at one time. This is a limitation of the computer OS.

The Plantronics D100 USB adapter was originally made as a replacement for the usb adapter that comes with the Savi W400 series computer headsets.
However, they can now be utilized to connect your Plantronics CS500 series headset to your computer. This is not an intuitive process and detailed instructions need to be followed.
1. Connect your D100 to an open USB port.
2. Take your headset off its base.
3. Make sure that the headset is off.
4. Double click the subscription button on the outer tip of the D100. The D100 will start flashing red/green.
5. Press and hold the volume up/down button on the back of the headset until the headset LED turns solid white and the D100’s lights turns solid green.
6. To test the subscription simply turn on the headset, if its subscribed the D100 will flash green while the connection is active.
If you no longer want to use the D100 simply put the wireless headset back on its base and it will resubscribe to the base automatically.
If you have a Grandstream phone model GXP2124, GXP2130, GXP2140, GXP2160, GXP2200, GXV3240, GXV3275, you’re in luck. There is a Plantronics EHS APD-80 adapter cable available for your phone. Instead of using an old fashion HL10 lifter, you can use the APD-80 EHS cable instead. There are no mechanic device attached to your phone that lifts the telephone receiver up and down, instead your Grandstream phone communicates with the Plantronics wireless headset “electronically” and more efficiently. By pressing a button on the wireless headset, the phone will answer almost instantaneously. Here are some basic setup instructions:
Install the APD-80 using the shown below:
Make sure your Grandstream phone is model GXP2124, GXP2130, GXP2140, GXP2160, GXP2200, GXV3240, GXV3275 or it won’t work. If you have other Grandstream models no on this list, you will need to use HL10 lifter for remote answering.
Make sure your Grandstream phone have a firmware 188.8.131.52 or higher, otherwise it won’t work with the Plantronics APD-80.
Go to your phone’s Menu > Config > Headset Type > select “Plantronics EHS”
If needed, purchase an additional 85638-01 extension cable if the APD-80 doesn’t reach your Grandstream phone.
Change the setting on the Plantronics wireless headset base to:

If you experience an echo (feedback) using a Plantronics wireless headset, you may need to adjust your headset transmit volume on the phone using the following steps It’s best the your telephone administrator perform these steps if you’re not familiar with the Grandstream phone administrator functions.
1) Using an admin computer (on the same network as the Grandstream phone)
2) Login into the Grandstream’s phone IP address. Make sure the Grandstream phone is turned on and shows it’s IP address.
3) Open a Web browser (like Internet Explorer) on your computer then enter the Grandstream’s phone IP address in the address bar.
4) Enter the administrators login and password to access the Web Configuration Menu
5) Go to the audio control panel. Select headset TX (transmit) gain, adjust the level so is lower your current level (default is 0). If you’re at “0”, set it to -1 or -2 until your echo is eliminated and your call can still hear you.
6) Save the new settings by pressing the “Save” or “Save and Apply” button. Reboot the phone to take effect.

For people who have hearing issues and are constantly on their phones there are a couple of solutions available that enable them to be able to have more control over the volume of the phone conversations.
If the employee has a corded headset it is advisable that they utilize an amplifier, which will enable them to have much more control over the volume of the phone calls.
(NOTE: Certain Bluetooth hearing aids made specifically for iPhone or Android are NOT compatible with this set up)
For Jabra corded headsets there are two amplifiers currently on the market, the

The Jabra Link 860 is powered through a usb port or one can purchase the optional AC adapter. The GN Netcom 8210 comes with an AC adapter. These are basically the only differences between the two aside from the look.
For a user of Plantronics corded headsets one can utilize either,
or the Plantronic MX10:
The Plantronics M22 is mainly for your desk phone while the MX10 can be used with both your deskphone and computer if needed.
For employee’s who have hearing aids which can utilize Bluetooth there is a different option. Plantronics have developed a special Bluetooth Adapter Dongle which allows certain hearing aids to attach to it wirelessly.
The Dongle is called the Plantronics SSP 2714-01:
In order to use the Dongle you must first get the Plantronics MDA220:
Connect it to your desk phone and computer if desired:
Once you have everything connected following these instructions in order to get everything setup:
1) Put the MiniTek into pairing mode
2) The SSP 2714-01 should discover the device and turn solid blue
3) Then hit the telephone button on the top of the MDA200 which should get the adapter flashing blue.
For additional information on how to Pair the miniTek with Bluetooth wireless technology enabled phones following these instructions:
1. Press the “Telephone“ button for 5 seconds
until the integrated LED is blinking to indicate that miniTek is in pairing mode.
2. Activate “Bluetooth“ in the desired Bluetooth
enabled telephone and search for available devices. miniTek will appear as “RCU Connect“.
3. Add miniTek to the list of known devices.
miniTek is now ready to receive calls from this telephone. If prompted, the PIN Code “0000“ can be entered into the telephone.
4. If desired, up to two different BT enabled phones may be paired for use with miniTek.

– Which Plantronics headset cable will work with my phone?
A question that we are asked daily is, “Which connection cable do I need for THIS headset to work with my phone?”
Well first off, almost all headsets & parts are proprietary into their own brands. So, while there may be a few oddball cables out there that claims to work with the big name-brand’s equipment (ie. Plantronics, Jabra, etc.), let’s keep this simple & stay within the same brand as your headset. For now, let’s assume that you have a Plantronics headset (Called an H-Series Headset).
All corded headsets for Professional Office phones require 2 parts; the headset itself, and then the connection cable. This cable will vary depending upon your phone’s brand & sometimes even the model number. While most of these phone’s will use an RJ9 modular plug, that doesn’t mean that “Any old headset will work just because it has an RJ9 plug.” On the contrary! Each phone manufacturer wires their headset ports different from one another. So remember, just because it fits…doesn’t mean it’ll work.
There are simply far too many phone brands to mention them all in this blog, so for sake of space (And your attention span) I will just list the most commonly used brands & which cables will work with them…in conjunction with a Plantronics H-Series Headset.
- CISCO Phones – For most of the Cisco phones (Generally those with a model number in the 7900, 8900, or 9900’s with a dedicated headset port) you will use the Plantronics Cisco/M22 Cable. However, if you have a Cisco/LinkSys “SPA” model phone, then you would use a special cable, simply called the Plantronics SPA Cable.
- POLYCOM Phones – For Polycom phone’s it can be a bit tricky. For most of the Polycom IP phones you can ONLY use the following model headsets from Plantronics (HW291N, HW301N, HW251, HW251N, HW261, HW261N, H81, H81N), in addition to a cable called the Polaris Cable. However, if you have the following Polycom SoundPoint models (IP320, IP321, IP330, IP331, Pro SE220, or Pro SE225) then you can use ANY of the Plantronics H-Series headsets in conjunction with the 2.5mm to QD Adapter Cable.
- NORTEL, NEC Phones – This is the single most commonly used cable in the industry…called the A10 Cable. This comes in 2 flavors; the standard A10, or an A10-12 High Output Cable (Which is exclusively designed for use with the Nortel phones due to its low level onboard amplifier). Essentially, if you have an NEC or a Nortel phone with a dedicated headset port…you are almost certainly going to be using an A10 Cable, along with ANY Plantronics H-Series Headset.
- SHORETEL Phones – Shoretel’s also use the A10 standard cable, along with ANY Plantronics H-Series Headset.
- AVAYA Phones – Once again, Avaya phones have 2 different cables depending upon your phone model. For the most part, if you have an Avaya 9600 or 1600 series phone (With a dedicated headset port) you will use the HIS Cable. However, if you use any other Avaya phone model and it has a dedicated headset port, you will almost certainly use the HIC Cable instead….again, with an H-Series Headset. Call us if you are unsure.
- PANASONIC Phones – This one is simple…if you have a Panasonic phone with a headset port (Small round hole, called a 2.5mm port) then you can use ANY of the Plantronics H-Series headsets in conjunction with the 2.5mm to QD Adapter Cable.
- My Phone Has No Headset Port – If your phone has no dedicated headset port, then you will have to use an “External amplifier” such as the M22 Vista along with the H-Series Headset. Almost all handset/receiver ports (Even though they are RJ9) don’t have enough power to amplify any headset.
* Important note: Most of these cables look incredibly similar to each other. There are very tiny subtleties that can help to identify them, since they are not always listed on the cable itself. My next Blog will go into how you can tell these cables apart from one another.

Do I need an amplifier (Plantronics M22) for my phone? Most telephones do not provide adequate power for a headset. A headset amplifier will provide additional power for the headset via batteries or an AC adapter. Amplifiers also offer volume (incoming and outgoing) and mute controls.
Although most telephones require an amplifier, some do not. Check our list of office phones that do not require an amplifier in our direct connect headset page. You can also check our Compatibility Guide to learn whether or not your telephone will require an amplifier in order to work with your headset. (After selecting a headset model, please check the amplifier/adapter section on the right side of the page.)
Plantronics M22 and Plantronics M12 (older model) headset Amplifier connects Plantronics H-Series headsets to just about any single or multi-line “office” type phone and offer ergonomically designed volume, headset/handset, and mute controls. Connects Plantronics headsets to most single or multi-line telephones.
Plantronics M22 Installation instructions – The line cord coming out of the wall stays in your telephone. The hand receiver cable is the only cable to be removed from your telephone. Unplug the Hand receiver from the base of the telephone and connect it to the back of the Plantronics Vista M22, where it shows a picture of just a hand receiver. Then the short cable that came with the Plantronics Vista M22 gets plugged into the back of the Vista M22 where it shows a picture of a full telephone and the other end plugs into where the hand receiver used to be.
Switch Setting information
1 = Carbon
2 & 3 = Phone specific such as AT&T Merlin
4 = Electret test setting. Noy fully functional
5 = Electret w/batteries installed
The battery compartments of the Plantronics Vista M22 amplifier is located on the left side of the units. Both have a U shaped door. To remove this battery door, simply apply pressure while pushing down. The door will slide off of the amplifier. see picture below:

– I have different Plantronics cables. How can I tell them apart?
Here are another couple questions that we are asked from time to time:
1.) We just switched our telephones out with a different brand of phone & now we are stuck with all of these headsets that no longer work. What can we do?
2.) We have a drawer full of headset connection cables & can’t figure out one from another. How can we know which ones will work with which phones?
First off, you might still be able to use your old headset with your new phone. As long as your headset has a “QD” (Quick Disconnect) in the middle of the cable, then you only need match the correct brand to your headset & phone.
For starters, most everything in the headset realm is proprietary. So, if you have a Jabra headset, you will need to use it with a Jabra connection cable (Jabra, AKA GN Netcom).
Plantronics, for instance, doesn’t necessarily label all of their cables. So, it can be quite difficult to identify them from one another if you don’t know just what to look for. The cables listed below will work with all of the Plantronics H-Series headsets. Here is a list of what to look for on Plantronics cables & how you can identify them:
