One EncorePro HW510, eight ways to connect

Search for the EncorePro HW510 and you'll find what looks like eight different headsets — Avaya this, Cisco that, a voice-tube version, a plain "QD" one. They're the same headset. The Plantronics EncorePro HW510 is a single mono, over-the-head, noise-canceling headset, and what changes between versions is one thing: how it connects to your phone.

Get that one choice right and the headset plugs in and works. Get it wrong and you're buying an amplifier you didn't expect to need, or a voice tube when you wanted noise canceling. Here's how to pick the exact EncorePro HW510 for your desk.

Build the exact EncorePro HW510 you need

Eight versions, and they differ along just two questions: noise-canceling mic or voice tube, and how it reaches your phone.

The microphone — almost everyone wants noise-canceling.

  • Noise-canceling (HW510). The standard choice. The mic filters your background out of the caller's ear — the feature that makes this a call-center headset. Seven of the eight versions use it. (783Q1AA#ABA)
  • Voice tube (HW510V). A hollow tube in place of the noise-canceling mic — no background filtering. Pick this only if you specifically need a voice tube. (783Q3AA#ABA)

The connection — match it to your phone, and the right cable is in the box.

  • Universal QD — needs an amplifier or cable. The bare Quick Disconnect version, no cable included. Add a Plantronics M22 amplifier, a direct-connect bottom cable, or a QD-to-USB adapter for softphones — sold separately. For multi-line phones, softphones, or when you already own the amp. (783Q1AA#ABA)
  • Avaya 1400 / 2400 / 4600 / 5400 / 9400 / 9500. Includes the certified Avaya adapter cable for these older Avaya digital and IP series — plugs straight in, no amplifier. (783Q1AA+HIC)
  • Avaya J100 / 1600 / 9600. Includes the Avaya cable for J139–J189, 1600, and 9600 phones. No amplifier. (783Q1AA+HIS)
  • Cisco IP (69xx–99xx). Includes the Cisco cable for the headset port on Cisco IP 69xx / 78xx / 79xx / 88xx / 89xx / 99xx phones. No amplifier. (783Q1AA-CIS)
  • Cisco SPA. Includes a 2.5mm cable for Cisco SPA 303, 5xx, and 9xx phones. No amplifier. (783Q1AA-SPA)
  • Polycom. Includes the Polycom RJ9 cable for Soundpoint IP and VVX phones. No amplifier. (783Q1AA-PO)
  • Yealink. Includes the Yealink RJ9 cable for Yealink SIP-T phones. No amplifier. (783Q1AA-YEA)

Does the EncorePro HW510 need an amplifier?

It depends on the version. The phone-specific bundles — Avaya, Cisco, Polycom, Yealink, and Cisco SPA — include the exact certified cable for that phone, so they plug into your phone's headset port and work with no amplifier. The plain universal QD version includes no cable: its Quick Disconnect needs a Plantronics M22 amplifier, a direct-connect bottom cable, or a QD-to-USB adapter for softphones, bought separately.

This is the ordering mistake to avoid: the universal QD EncorePro HW510 does not plug into a desk phone on its own — it needs an amplifier or cable. If you know your phone, the matching bundle is the simpler and usually cheaper buy, because the certified cable is already in the box and there's no amplifier to add. If your phone isn't listed, or you're on a softphone, the universal QD plus the right adapter is the path — call us and we'll match it for you.

The noise-canceling mic — and when to skip it

Seven of the eight versions use a noise-canceling microphone: it filters the room out of what your caller hears, which is what keeps a busy floor from bleeding into every call. The eighth, the HW510V, swaps that for a hollow voice tube — no noise filtering at all.

HW510 — noise-canceling mic
Filters background noise out of your outgoing voice. The right choice for any normal office or call center, and what seven of the eight versions use.
HW510V — voice tube
A replaceable hollow tube, no noise canceling. Chosen mainly for hygiene (the tube swaps out) or to standardize on legacy equipment. Not for noisy rooms.

Built to survive a call center

Every version is built the same way underneath: aircraft-grade aluminum with laser-welded construction and metal joints, the most durable EncorePro yet, with soft replaceable ear cushions and an adjustable headband. The flexible boom has visual and tactile positioning guides — a click-stop that tells your fingers when the mic is in the right spot, so every agent sounds clear without fiddling. It replaces the older HW251N and is light enough to forget over a full shift.

No matter which version you choose, every EncorePro HW510 includes:

  • Wideband audio up to 6,800 Hz for richer, clearer calls
  • SoundGuard acoustic-shock protection
  • Telecoil hearing aid compatibility (HAC)
  • Laser-welded aircraft-grade aluminum and metal joints
  • Quick Disconnect for walk-away convenience
  • A 2-year manufacturer warranty

Hearing protection and HAC

The EncorePro HW510 uses SoundGuard acoustic limiting to cap sudden noise spikes, which helps a contact center meet OSHA and Noise at Work requirements over long shifts. It's also telecoil hearing aid compatible, so agents who use a T-coil-equipped hearing aid can run it.

SoundGuard limits spikes below 118 dBA

For a softphone setup, the same headset reaches Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Webex through a QD-to-USB adapter, and works with Poly Lens for central device management — so the HW510 isn't only a desk-phone headset. Pick the connection that matches what's on your desk today, and you've got a headset built to outlast it.

  • Plantronics EncorePro HW510 headset with Quick Disconnect (or HW510V with voice tube)
  • Soft foam ear cushion (fitted)
  • Quick start guide

What else is in the box depends on the version: the Avaya, Cisco, Cisco SPA, Polycom, and Yealink bundles add the certified adapter cable for that phone, so there's nothing more to buy. The universal QD version includes no cable or amplifier — add an M22 amplifier, a direct-connect cable, or a QD-to-USB adapter separately. Replacement foam and leatherette cushions, an EncorePro headband support pad, and spare voice tubes (for the HW510V) are available separately.

Software. With a QD-to-USB adapter, the EncorePro HW510 works with PC softphones and UC platforms — Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Webex among them — and integrates with Poly Lens for central device management and firmware updates. The noise-canceling versions keep your background out of the caller's audio on any of them.

Hardware. The HW510 ends in a Poly Quick Disconnect. The universal QD version needs a Plantronics M22 amplifier, a direct-connect bottom cable, or a QD-to-USB adapter to reach a phone or PC. The Avaya, Cisco, Cisco SPA, Polycom, and Yealink bundles include the certified cable for that phone and plug straight into its headset port — no amplifier needed.

Platforms. The EncorePro HW510 is built for telephone-intensive work — formal customer care centers, help desks, telesales, and dispatch — on desk phones and softphones alike, where durability and clear noise-canceled voice matter through an all-day shift.
