- What causes a buzz sound in my Plantronics Headset?   Date: Monday August 21, 2006
FAQ Summary:
I hear a buzz or hum in my Plantronics headset; what is it cause?

FAQ Content:

Intermittent buzzing or humming can be caused by electrical equipment located in the immediate area of the telephone and headset system, such as fluorescent lighting, computers, fax machines, typewriters, and power strips (surge protectors). Frequently, power cords and cables that are bundled together will cause buzzing. The best solution is to keep this type of equipment separated from the headset, amplifier and telephone.

There are several factors that could be causing a buzz or humming on a headset. A lot depends on what model you are using.

1) If you're using a Plantronis corded headset and a Plantronics Vista M12/Plantronics Vista M22 Amplifers

Go to the slide switch settings on the left hand side of the Plantronics Vista M10/M12/M22. In some cases it should be set at 6 rather than 5. If that does not help the situation, the problem could be environmental, from electrical devices in your area. It could also be a compatibility issue with your telephone.

2) If you're using a Plantronics Wireless Headsets such as the Plantronics CS50, CS55, CS70, CS60, CS351, CS351N, 510S

  1. The headset could be too close to the telephone. Try moving it further away from the phone if possible.

  2. Intermittent buzzing can be caused by electrical equipment located in the immediate area of the telephone and headset system, such as fluorescent lights, computers, fax machines, typewriters, and power strips (surge protectors). Frequently, power cords and cables that are bundled together will cause buzzing. The best solution is to keep this type of equipment separated from the headset, amplifier and telephone whenever possible.

  3. Try changing the configuration dial (wheel on the left side of the charging base) to a different setting. The recommended setting for most phones is 1.

  4. The unit may be picking up radio frequency. Call Plantronics Technical Support @ 1-800-544-4660 for information on a Plantronics RFI filter.

3) If you're on a Plantronics CS10/CA10 Unit:

  1. Try changing channels using the channel button on your remote unit.

  2. Try locating your base unit in different positions.

  3. Make sure that no objects are positioned between the remote and base unit.

  4. Be sure that neither the remote or base units are next to electronic equipment or other radio frequency devices.

  5. Try moving the Configuration Switch on the back of the base unit to the opposite setting (A or B).
