Plantronics CS55 products are advanced communications units with an integrated headset. The Plantronics CS55 communications family includes the CS50, CS70 and the CS3 xx. Different headset models are designed for different purposes. Some can replace a telephone’s handset; connect into the headset ports of different telephone manufacturers; and into personal computers.

All Plantronics headsets fit over the user’s ear or head; and there is an optional behind the head model on request. Plantronics also supplies accessories such as a mechanical lifter/ring detector and an online indicator. Platronics prides itself in that all its CS55 units provide secure wireless communications.

Technical Facts about Plantronics CS55 Wireless Headset Technology

Radio System

The CS55 family operates on the 1920 – 1930 MHz (1.9 GHz) Unlicensed Personal Communications Services (UPCS) radio band. This is the band used in the United States. The Canadian equivalent is License Exempt- Personal Communications Services (LE-PCS).

They use 32 kbits/s ADPCM vocoding; it encrypts this data into TDMA format and PSK modulation. It transmits using a low duty cycle in non constant envelope mode. The technology is based on European DECT standard but Plantronics has modified the frequency to comply with UPCS etiquette and to operate in the 1920 – 1930 MHz band for North America compared with the 1880 – 1900 MHz required in European countries.

Technology Acceptance

Plantronics CS55 products are certified to meet 47 CFR Ch 1 ss 15D standard for UPCS systems using digitization. Plantronics CS55 products also meet the Canadian regulation RSS-213, issue 2. If you are purchasing a Plantronics product in any other country check with the Plantronics Service directly for information about regulatory compliance with that country’s standards.

Transmission Levels

The transmitters signal reaches 10 mW at its peak but is around 0.4 mW on average. Its SAR is measured at 0.0056 W/kg maximum which is a transmission level 1/1000 th the maximum transmission cell phones use.

Electromagnetic Compatibility

Plantronics CS55 products use TDMA/TDD transmission technology which use low power cycles to switch the system on to transmits voice data. It is similar to how cell phones work but uses less power to transmit. This is compatible in most environments except where EKG, EEG, pulse oximetry and other sensitive equipment is used in close proximity of the device. In general, a Plantronics CS55 headset is compatible with the same environments as cell phones and produce better results because of it low power level of transmission.

Powering your Plantronics CS55 Unit

The headset is powered by Lithium-polymer single cell battery. The operator can talk all day with 3 hours battery charging and half a day with 1 hour charging.

The charging system is designed to look after the battery so it lasts the lifetime of the product. For best results, the headset should be stored on the bases docking station so it is charging when not in use.

If for any reason the headset battery completely discharges its power it should be charged for a least an hour for optimum performance. You can charge the headset for just a few minutes to keep your self going for a few minutes at a time.

The following are the battery state indications:

    • Fully Discharged. If there is no result when you push the Talk button on the headset then the battery is fully discharged. Dock the headset on the base unit and let it power up for a few minutes. In this state, the headset will not subscribe or go into Talk mode.
    • Nearly Discharged. If pressing the Talk button you get an error tone (three beeps in the earpiece) and it will not enter Talk mode then the battery is nearly discharged. A lower frequency background beep will occur every 10 seconds to warn you are running out of time. The system may or may not subscribe or enter Talk mode when you put it back into the docking station. In this state the system may subscribe and enter Talk mode while docked but may not link, or take several minutes to link, once is taken from the charger.
    • Normal. In the normal state, the headset will subscribe and link when you press the Talk button.

The following are the indications that display when the headset battery is charging:

  • The amber charge LED flashes every second when the headset is charging.
  • When charging is complete, the amber LED glows continuously.
  • The amber LED will flash rapidly to warn of a faulty battery or if the headset is seated in the docking station. Try redocking the headset. If the LD does not stop flashing, check the battery.
