Why your Poly headset keeps saying mute on, mute off
Your Poly headset is telling you its microphone just muted or unmuted. If you didn't press Mute, something else changed it: a knocked button, the mic boom or wearing sensors on a Voyager Focus 2, or your calling app muting the headset for you. To unmute, press the headset's Mute button once.
"Mute on" itself can't be switched off, but you can turn "mute off" into a tone and silence the mute reminder.
How to unmute the common Poly headsets
- Voyager 4310 or 4320: tap the red Mute button. A solid red light means it's still muted.
- Blackwire 3300 series: press the mute button on the inline control on the cable, and press it again to unmute. Solid red means muted.
- Voyager Focus 2: tap Mute, or rotate the mic boom back down if it's up.
- Muted in Teams: unmute in the Teams call, then see the Teams step below so it stops happening.
The Voyager Focus 2 is a Bluetooth headset that reaches your computer through its BT700 USB adapter, so a few of the fixes below happen on the computer, not the headset.
How to stop a Poly headset muting itself
Go in order and stop when the muting stops. The first three are for the Voyager Focus 2, whose mic boom and earcup sensors can both mute it. The rest apply to any Poly headset on a computer.
Check the mic boom
Rotating the boom up until it clicks mutes the Focus 2. If it sits high or gets knocked, it mutes and unmutes as it moves. Keep it all the way down.
Reset the wearing sensors
The sensors in the Focus 2 earcups mute the mic when they think you've taken the headset off. Resetting them keeps the feature and fixes a bad reading.
Either sit the powered-on headset on its charge stand for 10 seconds, or turn it on while holding Mute for more than 4 seconds, until the lights flash purple 4 times. Keep your hands and the desk off the earcup padding while you do it.
Turn the sensors off
If it still mutes when you tilt your head or lean back, hold Mute and Call together for more than 4 seconds, until the light flashes purple then red. This won't work while audio is playing, so pause music or end the call first.
You lose one thing: taking the headset off no longer mutes you. To turn them back on, repeat the hold. The light flashes purple then blue.
Close every other calling app
Poly's guide says to keep only one softphone open, so quit any calling app you aren't using. Then set the headset as the default microphone and speaker, both in your computer's sound settings and in the calling app.
Stop Teams controlling the mute
In Teams, go to Settings, then Devices, and turn off Sync device buttons. People on Microsoft's Q&A forum report this stops Teams muting their Poly headset when a call ends.
Reinstall the BT700 driver
In Windows, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Find Poly BT700, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, tick the box to delete the driver, and restart. Windows installs it fresh. One user on Microsoft's Q&A forum with exactly this problem reported mute worked from the headset again afterwards.
Update the firmware
Open the HP Poly Studio app, the new name for Poly Lens since January 2026, with the headset connected and install any update. This is the first thing HP's own support team asks Focus 2 owners with mute problems to do.
Once the muting stops, run a quick headset mic test. Talk for a few seconds and watch the level meter: if it drops to nothing while you are still talking, the headset is still muting.
How to make it talk less
You can't turn off "mute on". The answer on Poly's own community forum to exactly this question is that the announcement is built into the headset's firmware. You can change the other two sounds in the HP Poly Studio app or Poly Lens:
- Mute off: switch it from tone and voice to tone only, so unmuting beeps instead of speaking.
- Mute reminder: the repeating tone or whisper you get when you talk while muted. Go to Settings, then General, and set Mute Reminder to Off.
You don't have to install anything to do this. The Poly Lens Web App runs in Chrome or Edge at webapp.lens.poly.com, and it supports the Voyager Focus 2 and the BT700 adapter. That works on a locked-down work laptop.
