There are a large section of people who kind of get tangled up with headsets and headphones. Headphones happen to have earpieces while their main purpose is to listen to music. Headsets too have earpieces (can even have 1 earpiece based upon the style) additionally a microphone, main objective being to aid communications (both talking & listening) via an ATC instrument, computer, phone, etc.

Headsets can be used as an enhancement for hearing music, for voice identification technology, on gaming consoles, communicating with tower on the runway and even to speak to your husband while you are chopping some vegetables. Headsets basically keep you in hands free modes when you are occupied yet want to communicate. Through headsets speaking through your when driving a car is much more safe.

The 1st basic radio headset was innovated in the year 1910 by Nathaniel Baldwin who was then studying at the Stanford University. As most innovators are, Baldwin too was a person thinking differently and was unable to get the backing of a private company to mass-produce his radio headset. His innovation remained an unknown entity for a couple of years till one day when the U.S. Navy asked for a hundred headsets just prior to the World War I taking place. In the early days of headsets requirements came mainly from the aviation industry. As a matter of fact 2 pilots began Plantronics in the year 1961, as they needed a not too heavyweight, cockpit headset that was comfortable on use. The result – Plantronics MS-50, the lightest headset in the world came out—and till date is used by pilots plying commercial flights!

Even though the aircraft industry showed that lightweight headsets were viable, only with the advent of the telephone its true demand was set. During 1960s, Bell System’s system board machinists were left feeling lethargic due to their uneasy, weighty headsets, due to which a high percentage of machinists had to take to doing neck-strengthening drills so that they could again be in a position to use those headsets.

Plantronics gave Bell machinists the identical MS-50 aircraft headset for application. Thereafter quite a handful of machinists asked for headsets that instead of fitting over the head, sat around the ear. For this – StarSet headset was brought out in the year 1970. During 1980s, Plantronics came out with Supra headset that has recently become the most widely accepted telephone headset across the globe. Then during the 1990’s, cell phones were all over the place, and that’s when Plantronics introduced the M-Series headsets. Following 2000, hands free communication’s popularity has soared, and that’s when Plantronics introduced the Bluetooth-enabled M3000. (Briefly, Bluetooth happens to be technology for wireless radio connectivity of electronic gadgets sans using wires—an idea that some years were pure imagination. Now is widely used)

One off late development with regards to headsets is taking place on the PC. The number of people using such services is increasing by the day and applies it for online gaming that is interactive, voice recognition plus for phone calling. Plantronics produced ‘DSP series’ and ‘dot Audio series’ headsets just to aid computers services.

There are newer headsets in the market frequently as its office & home application keeps evolving. Communications is actually getting cheaper and thus it is a growing market with there being millions of new mobile subscribers in China and India every month so the market is a bright for the headset devices too. And headsets are no longer a opulence, it is the way the world communicates today.
