The Plantronics RD-1 is a unique piece of equipment that only works with select makes and models of phones.
2) Allworx Phones: IP 9112, 9204, 9212, 9222, 9224
The reasons that these phones work with the RD-1 is because the above phones already have what is called an electronic hook switch built into it. When using your wireless headset you can answer your calls remotely.
However, you will not be able to tell that your phone is ringing through your Plantronics headset unless you get the RD-1 or an equivalent Jabra EHS/Lifter. The RD-1 works by sending a signal to your wireless headset which tells it that a phone call is coming in by beeping in the ear piece.
If you decide that you do not need the RD-1 you can still answer your phone through your headset however you will need to be in hearing distance from your desk phone.
Below is a picture showing how the Plantronics RD-1 is connected to a desk phone.
The Plantronics RD-1 has a ring sensor on it that needs to be placed on the telephone speaker, shown above, so that it can sense the vibrations from the phone when it rings. Since the RD-1’s only job is to sense the incoming calls its price is greatly reduced from a normal EHS cable.
Although the RD-1 provides a much needed service its not absolutely necessary in order for one to answer calls through their wireless headsets.
