The EnGenius DuraFon Pro PIB20L Outdoor Phone System

A farm, a ranch, or a car lot doesn't have walls to help a phone signal along — it has open sky, distance, and weather. The EnGenius DuraFon Pro PIB20L System Kit is the same long-range DuraFon Pro phone and 2-way radio system as our standard kit, built specifically for that environment: it ships with a high-gain outdoor antenna and lightning protection already included, instead of leaving those as an afterthought once the base station's built-in antenna falls short outdoors.

That distinction matters more than it looks like on a spec sheet. A base station's stock antenna is tuned for a building's interior — take it outside across open acreage and you lose a meaningful chunk of the system's rated range. The PIB20L closes that gap before you've even opened the box.

What the external antenna actually changes on the DuraFon Pro system

The included EnGenius AK20L is a 900 MHz, 6 dBi omnidirectional antenna built for outdoor mounting, connected to the base with roughly 66 feet (20 meters) of low-loss LMR-400 coax cable. Mounted higher and clear of obstructions, it restores the line-of-sight signal path that a base's internal antenna loses once you're covering open ground rather than a building interior.

Up to 12 floors in-building · 250,000 sq. ft. indoors · 3,000 acres outdoors
Mount the AK20L antenna as high and as clear of buildings, trees, and equipment as you can — height and a clean line of sight matter more to outdoor range than the antenna's rated gain figure alone.

Lightning protection built in, not bolted on later

Running a cable up to an outdoor antenna means running a lightning path straight toward your base station, so this kit includes EnGenius's recommended lightning protection module inline on that cable run. It's a surge arrestor rated to absorb repeated hits — it's designed to trip and protect the line several hundred times over its life before it needs replacing, not to be a single-use fuse you're re-buying after every storm.

Everything else matches the standard DuraFon Pro PIA kit

The base unit, the 4 DuraFon Pro handsets, the battery packs, and the per-handset antennas are identical to our standard PIA package. Every handset functions as both a cordless phone and a 2-way radio — private handset-to-handset intercom, or broadcast to the whole group — completely independent of whether the call is coming through the outdoor antenna or the base's internal one.

Scales past the 4 handsets included

The base supports up to 90 handsets, and the system expands to 8 base units for up to 32 total phone lines — you can grow the crew on this system well past what ships in the box, and the outdoor antenna and lightning protection keep working the same way as you add handsets.

Battery life and durability

6 hours talk time · 50 hours standby

Each handset ships with two hot-swappable Li-Ion batteries, so a spare stays in the cradle while the other's in use — the same setup used across every DuraFon Pro kit, built for staff who are on their feet most of the shift rather than sitting at a desk.

For any location where the antenna has to survive wide-open exposure and real weather, the DuraFon Pro PIB20L is the one DuraFon Pro kit built to handle both from day one.

Software: The DuraFon Pro base has no VoIP client or app dependency — it connects at the line level, working the same whether the line behind it is a legacy phone line, a PBX extension, or a VoIP provider's analog gateway port.

Hardware: The base connects to any analog telephone port — a PBX analog extension, an FXS port on a VoIP gateway, or a standard PSTN/POTS line. The included AK20L antenna connects to the base via coax and is designed for outdoor or high-exposure mounting, with the lightning protection module installed inline on that run.

Platforms: Because it operates independently of Wi-Fi and VoIP signaling, the DuraFon Pro system isn't tied to a specific UC platform — it works behind whatever phone system already terminates in an analog port.
