Headset Software for Windows & Mac: Which App Do You Need?

If you've just plugged in a new headset and something told you to "install the app," you've hit the most confusing corner of the whole category. Every brand has its own software, the names change constantly, and half the download pages you'll find point at apps that were retired years ago. Here's the short, current answer: which app you actually need depends only on the brand of headset in front of you.

Two names cover almost everyone — the HP Poly Studio App for Poly headsets, and Jabra Direct for Jabra. Everything else is either enterprise fleet software or a discontinued app you can safely ignore.

Which headset software do I need for Windows or Mac?

Match the app to the brand of your headset — that's the entire decision. Both current apps do the same three things, so there's nothing to weigh beyond which headset you own.

All of them run on Windows and macOS, with iOS and Android companions for the desktop apps. What they give you is the same across brands: current firmware, personalization (sidetone, ringtones, busylight, hearing-protection levels), and remote call control — the ability to answer, end, and mute softphone calls from the buttons on the headset instead of hunting through the app on screen.

Poly (Plantronics) software: the HP Poly Studio App

For a Poly headset, the current app is the HP Poly Studio App. This is the one that trips people up, because the name has changed twice: it started as Plantronics Hub, became Poly Lens, and was renamed the HP Poly Studio App in early 2026 — while the underlying features stayed the same throughout.

Jabra software: Jabra Direct

For a Jabra headset, the app is Jabra Direct — a free desktop application for Windows and Mac that keeps your headset's firmware current, lets you personalize its settings, and gives you remote call control over softphones like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Cisco Jabber, and Avaya.

Jabra Direct is actively maintained — recent releases added Apple Silicon support and updated the Teams and Zoom plugins — so it's worth keeping current rather than installing once and forgetting. For rolling software and firmware out across many headsets at once, IT teams use Jabra Xpress, the web-based fleet equivalent. Do I actually need the software?

For a basic corded headset, no — plug it into a USB port and it works for calls without any app. You need the software for two things specifically: updating firmware, and getting remote call control so the headset's own answer and mute buttons drive your softphone. On a wireless headset, that call control is what makes the range useful, so the app matters more.
