The Poly Savi 8245 Wireless Headset

A headset that dies mid-call on a long shift is worse than one with mediocre battery to begin with — at least you'd know to charge it. The Poly Savi 8245 wireless headset solves that with a hot-swappable battery system built into every version: one battery in the headset, a spare charging alongside it, swap between them without dropping the call.

It comes in two genuinely different connectivity setups — a USB dongle for PC-only softphone calls, or a full Office base station adding a desk phone and Bluetooth mobile phone — and two certification tracks. Picking the wrong one isn't a disaster, but it does mean paying for connectivity you won't use, or missing the certification your platform actually checks for.

Build the exact Savi 8245 you need

Two choices, and they're independent of each other: how it connects, and which certification matches your platform.

How it connects:

  • USB Dongle (PC Only). Plugs into a PC or Mac with the included D400 adapter. Right for anyone whose calls run entirely through a softphone, with no desk phone or mobile pairing needed.
  • Office Base (Desk Phone + PC + Mobile). A full base station with three-way connectivity — desk phone, computer, and Bluetooth mobile phone. Right for anyone still fielding desk phone calls or needing a mobile connection from the same headset.

Which certification:

  • UC Certified. Compatible with Avaya, Cisco, IBM, Skype, and other major UC softphone platforms.
  • Microsoft Certified. Formal Microsoft Teams certification for teams standardized on Teams.
USB Dongle
PC/Mac only, via D400 adapter. Up to 590 ft range. No desk phone or mobile connectivity. Currently sold with no planned changes.
Office Base
Desk phone + PC + Bluetooth mobile. Up to 590 ft range, 180 ft typical office. Being phased out in favor of the newer Savi 8445 Office.

How unlimited talk time actually works on the Poly Savi 8245 wireless headset

Every Poly Savi 8245 wireless headset ships with two batteries — one installed, one charging in the base or dongle cradle. When the active battery runs low, swap it without ending the call. That's the literal mechanism behind "unlimited talk time," not a rounding-up of a long single-charge number. Each battery runs up to 7 hours on its own; the swap removes the ceiling entirely.

Up to 590 ft range · 7 hrs per battery, unlimited with hot-swap · 21 g headset weight

What owners actually report

One detailed owner review of the Savi 8245 USB dongle configuration described real-world range covering an entire house plus roughly 70 feet down the driveway — short of the 590 ft rated maximum, which tracks with how DECT range typically performs once walls and distance replace a clear line of sight. That same reviewer noted the noise-canceling microphone held up well enough to run water and wash dishes mid-call without the other person noticing.

Rated range and real-world range are different numbers. Expect the Poly Savi 8245 wireless headset to comfortably cover a house or an office floor — not the full 590 ft once walls and distance are in the mix.

Only the Office base is changing — the USB dongle isn't

Poly merged the old single-battery Savi 8240 and the hot-swap Savi 8245 Office into one new model, the Savi 8445 Office, which now includes the extra battery as standard. If you're buying the Office (base-station) configuration of the Poly Savi 8245 wireless headset, you're buying into a line being phased out — worth comparing against the Savi 8445 Office before committing a whole department to it. The USB dongle configuration is a different story: according to Poly's own current guidance, the dongle-only Savi 8200 UC series headsets, including this one, have no planned changes and remain fully current with the D400 adapter.

Dongle stays, base is being replaced

The Office base configuration of the Poly Savi 8245 wireless headset is being consolidated into the newer Savi 8445 Office. The USB dongle configuration isn't part of that change — it remains a current, actively sold product.

The adapter upgrade nobody mentioned

Poly quietly updated the USB dongle configuration to ship with the newer D400 adapter and a USB-A to USB-C adapter, replacing the original D200 dongle this product launched with. If you're comparing against an older review or listing mentioning the D200, know that current stock ships with the newer hardware.

Noise, comfort, and three wearing styles

All three wearing styles — over-the-head, over-the-ear, and behind-the-neck — ship in the box on every configuration, so the Poly Savi 8245 wireless headset adapts to whoever's wearing it rather than locking one person into one style. The noise-canceling microphone runs with Close Conversation Limiting, a separate feature from noise cancellation itself: the mic filters what your caller hears, while Close Conversation Limiting keeps your own voice from carrying to the desk next to you. SoundGuard DIGITAL caps sound exposure at 118dBA, protecting your hearing from a sudden spike on the line. At 21 g, it's light enough that a full shift in any wearing style doesn't turn into ear fatigue by mid-afternoon.

Software, conferencing, and remote answering

With Plantronics Hub or Poly Lens installed, the Poly Savi 8245 wireless headset adds a battery meter in the system tray, presence updates synced automatically across multiple softphones, and a control panel for customizing call notifications. Up to 3 additional Savi headsets can conference into a single base or dongle for training or group calls. On the Office configuration, remote hands-free answering away from the desk phone requires an HL10 handset lifter or EHS cable, sold separately.

This is the headset for someone whose calls run long enough that a single battery, however good the rating, isn't a comfortable margin — the hot-swap is the actual reason to pay for this over a standard single-battery DECT headset, not a bonus feature bolted on for the spec sheet. Pick the connectivity that matches how you take calls, and the certification that matches your platform, and the battery stops being something you think about during the day.
