Cisco 8841 EOL: Which 7800 and 8800 Phones Are Actually Being Retired

Cisco 8841 EOL status

The Cisco 8841 isn't end of life. As of September 2026, Cisco hasn't announced an end-of-sale date for the 8841, or for the 8811, 8851, 8861, 7841 or 7861. The desk phones on their way out are the 7811 and 7821: the last day to order them from Cisco is October 28, 2026, and Cisco supports them until October 31, 2031.

What that means for you

  • Running 7821s? Plan the headsets with the phones. Cisco's named replacement, the Desk Phone 9841, has no corded headset jack.
  • Moving 8800s to Webex Calling or other MPP firmware? Check the hardware version against Field Notice FN74296 first.
  • Running 8841s on Unified CM? Nothing has changed, and there's no date to plan around.

Whichever phone you end up on, the headset question is the same: will the one you have plug into it? Our range of headsets for Cisco desk phones lists which phones each one fits.

Cisco 7800 and 8800 end of life, model by model

This is what Cisco's end-of-life notice pages list for the desk phones as of September 23, 2026. End of sale only stops new orders from Cisco. The last date of support is the one that matters for phones already on desks, because after it Cisco offers no service or support for the product at all.

The 8851 and the 7841 are in the same position as the 8841: neither has a notice. The 8800 notices that do exist cover other phones, including the 8845 and 8865 video phones and the 8821 wireless phone.

Why the 8800s look end of life when they aren't

Most of the talk about the 8800 series reaching end of life traces back to Field Notice FN74296, first published August 4, 2025 and updated September 30, 2025. It warns about moving older 8800 phones to MPP firmware. It doesn't retire anything.

How it gets read

Cisco has announced end of life for the 8800 series.

What FN74296 says

Some 8811, 8841, 8851, 8851NR and 8861 phones at hardware version 14 or earlier can run slower after moving to MPP firmware. Phones on Unified CM aren't affected, and the notice sets no end-of-sale date.

Cisco lists no workaround. Its advice for affected phones is to stay on Enterprise firmware, or to talk to Cisco about configuration changes or upgrade options. So FN74296 only affects you if you're moving to Webex Calling or another platform that runs MPP firmware, and only for the older hardware versions.

What the Cisco 9800 series changes for your headset

The Cisco 9800 series is where Cisco points 7800 owners: its notices name the Desk Phone 9811 as the 7811's replacement and the 9841 as the 7821's. The 9800s connect headsets differently from the phones they replace.

1 of 5 Desk Phone 9800 models has a corded headset port: the 9811
Cisco Desk Phone 9800 Series Data Sheet
  • 9811: one RJ-9 headset port. That's a gain for 7811 users, since Cisco's 7800 data sheet lists no headset key on the 7811.
  • 9841: one USB-A port and no headset jack. A corded headset from a 7821 won't plug in, so it needs a USB headset.
  • 9851: USB-A and USB-C, no headset jack.
  • 9861 and 9871: USB-A, USB-C and Bluetooth 5.2, apart from the no-radio versions.

The Aux port is the bigger change for wireless headsets. On a 7800 or 8800 it's where the EHS cable goes, so the headset's button can answer and end calls. The 9811 and 9841 still have an Aux port, but Cisco's data sheet lists it for console logs only, and the 9851, 9861 and 9871 don't have one. A wireless headset base that depends on an EHS cable has nowhere to connect it, so on a 9800 plan for a USB headset, or Bluetooth on a 9861 or 9871. Our guide to how EHS headsets connect to Cisco IP phones explains the setup the 7800 and 8800 use today.

Cisco's own 9800 headset compatibility guide covers only Cisco and Bang & Olufsen headsets. For any other brand, confirm with the headset maker that it supports USB audio on the 9800 model you're buying.

Moving phones between desks

If 8841s or 7841s change hands during a migration, each one still carries its last user's setup. Before you hand one on, wipe it back to factory settings so it picks up its new configuration cleanly.

Can I still buy a Cisco 7821 after October 28, 2026?

Not new from Cisco. Cisco says remanufactured 7821 phones may be available through its Cisco Refresh program in some countries, in limited supply, until the 7821's last date of support.

Will my Cisco headset work on a 9800 phone?

Cisco's 9800 headset compatibility guide lists the Cisco Headset 320, 520, 530, 560, 720 and 730 series and the Bang & Olufsen 950 and 980. How each one connects, by USB, RJ-9 or Bluetooth, depends on the 9800 model, so check the guide against yours.
