The port distinction that catches people out
This is the single most useful thing on this page, and it's counterintuitive because the two headset types use opposite ports on the same phone.
Myth
If my Nortel phone has a headset jack, that's where the wireless headset base goes.Reality
It isn't. Corded headsets plug into the dedicated headset jack. Wireless headset bases connect through the handset (receiver) port instead — you unplug the handset cord from the phone, plug it into the base, and run the base's cable back to the phone's handset port. Plugging a wireless base into the headset jack is the most common reason a Nortel setup doesn't work as expected.Corded headsets
Nortel phones include a built-in amplifier, so no external amplifier is needed. That also determines which Plantronics line you want.
Plantronics: Polaris, not H-series
Polaris (P-series) headsets are wired specifically for phones that amplify internally — which Nortel phones do. Standard H-series headsets expect amplification from an external amplifier, and the bottom cables are wired differently too, so the two lines aren't interchangeable.

Jabra: Biz with the Direct Connect cable
Jabra handles this without a separate product line. The Jabra Biz 1500 — mono or duo — comes complete with the Nortel-compatible adapter cable and offers a noise-cancelling microphone with wideband audio at a price that suits volume purchasing. The Biz 2300 is the durable step up, with a Kevlar-reinforced cord and a 360-degree boom.

Poly CS540 — the standard choice
The CS540 is the usual pick for Nortel: DECT with up to 350 feet of range, three wearing styles, and a user-replaceable battery. Bundled with an HL10 lifter it handles remote answering — see the part number note below.
Poly Savi 8410 or 8420 — for multiple devices
If you also take calls on a computer or mobile, the Savi 8400 series connects to all three at once — Nortel desk phone, computer, and a Bluetooth mobile paired to the base. Up to 590 feet of range, with the 8420 adding active noise cancelling.
If you're working from an older list, the Savi 8220 and CS530 are both discontinued — the Savi 8420 and CS540 replaced them respectively.
Jabra Engage 65 SE
The current Jabra DECT option, replacing the discontinued Jabra Pro 920 and Pro 9450 that older Nortel lists recommend. Up to 490 feet of range with high-encryption DECT. For remote answering with a Jabra headset, the GN1000 lifter is the equivalent of the HL10.
Remote answering: the part number that matters
To answer calls away from your desk you'll need a lifter — the Plantronics HL10 for Poly headsets, or the Jabra GN1000 for Jabra. On Nortel there's one specific requirement worth knowing before you order:
- Nortel M7100–M7900 and M3901–M3905 require part #63014-01 for the lifter to operate correctly.
- Nortel T7208 and T7316 do not require that part.

Nortel M2250 attendant consoles
