EnGenius DuraFon 1X vs PRO vs PSL vs 4X: What's the Difference?

EnGenius DuraFon 1X vs PRO vs PSL vs 4X: What's the Difference?

Four EnGenius DuraFon model names, several discontinued and replaced over the years — here's the plain comparison, current as of what's actually still available to buy today.

Quick answer

The DuraFon 1X (single-line, discontinued by EnGenius in 2019) and DuraFon 4X (4-line, discontinued around 2008) are both no longer manufactured. The DuraFon PRO replaced the 4X, adding speakerphone and multi-base registration (up to 8 bases). The DuraFon PSL is the current replacement for the 1X — a single-line version of the PRO, using PRO handsets, with identical range and ruggedness. None of the older handsets (1X, 4X) are compatible with the current PRO/PSL system.

DuraFon 1X — discontinued (2019)

The DuraFon 1X is a single-line long-range cordless phone system, identifiable by the black bezel around its handset's LCD. Up to 9 handsets can register to one base. It works like a standard cordless phone, just far more powerful and rugged — hence "Dura" "fon." EnGenius discontinued both the base and handsets in 2019, and neither is manufactured or available for purchase anymore.

DuraFon 4X — discontinued (circa 2008)

The DuraFon 4X was a 4-line system, identifiable by its silver bezel, discontinued by EnGenius around 2008 and replaced by the DuraFon PRO. 4X handsets and bases are not compatible with the 1X or PRO systems, and 4X handsets are no longer available for purchase.

DuraFon PRO — the current 4-line system

The DuraFon PRO replaced the 4X, and is identifiable by its green bezel. It adds two things the 4X didn't have: built-in speakerphone capability on the handsets, and multi-base registration, allowing two-way/broadcast communication across up to 8 total base units — where the 4X was limited to a single base. Range and other core features are otherwise identical between the two.

Myth

The DuraFon 1X and 4X are still current products you can order today.

Reality

Neither is available anymore. The 1X was discontinued by EnGenius in 2019, and the 4X around 2008 — both bases and handsets are out of production. If you're expanding or replacing an existing 1X system, the DuraFon PSL is the current equivalent; if you're expanding or replacing a 4X system, the DuraFon PRO is the current equivalent.

DuraFon PSL — the current replacement for the 1X

The DuraFon PSL (Pro Single Line) is the current replacement for the discontinued 1X. It's functionally the same system as the DuraFon PRO, except limited to a single phone line, and uses the same DuraFon PRO handset. Range, ruggedness, and every other spec match the rest of the DuraFon lineup. The PSL can also serve as a 1-line add-on to an existing PRO system if you need one additional line without a full second PRO base. The one limitation: it isn't compatible with existing DuraFon 1X systems or handsets — moving from a 1X to a PSL means starting fresh with PSL/PRO handsets, not reusing your old ones.

Shared specs across the DuraFon line

Every DuraFon system — 1X, 4X, PRO, and PSL — is rated for the same coverage: up to 250,000 square feet indoors, or 3,000 acres of open land. EnGenius rates these phones as roughly 6 times more powerful than an average cordless phone and 50 times more rugged, drop-tested from 6 feet onto concrete more than 50 times without breaking.

What replaced the discontinued DuraFon 1X?

The DuraFon PSL (Pro Single Line) is the current replacement — a single-line version of the DuraFon PRO, using PRO handsets, with the same range and ruggedness as the rest of the lineup. It is not compatible with existing 1X handsets or bases.

What replaced the discontinued DuraFon 4X?

The DuraFon PRO, which added speakerphone capability and multi-base registration (up to 8 bases) on top of the same core range and features the 4X had.

Can I mix DuraFon 1X, 4X, PRO, and PSL handsets and bases?

No. None of these systems are cross-compatible — a 1X handset only works with a 1X base, a 4X handset only with a 4X base, and PRO/PSL share handsets with each other but not with either older system.

Can I add a single line to an existing DuraFon PRO system?

Yes. The DuraFon PSL can be used as a 1-line add-on to an existing PRO system, without needing a second full PRO base.

How rugged are DuraFon phones?

EnGenius rates them as roughly 50 times more rugged than an average cordless phone, drop-tested from 6 feet onto concrete more than 50 times without breaking, and about 6 times more powerful in terms of range and signal strength.
